“Remarkable Rise” in Food Insecurity

In case you missed it, there were several news articles last month about a new economic study that has identified a “remarkable rise” in food insecurity in the United States.

The study mirrored the trend Project Share sees every month at our mobile food drop distributions in Pierson, FL. The number of families coming for food continues to grow. In May, we provided food for about 675 families, or about 3000 individuals. This number is far greater than we ever thought we’d see on distribution day. About 2 years ago, our monthly number of families served hovered around 350.

You can read about the study, which was released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, here.

The linked GMA article states that “The survey showed that the percentage of those who didn’t have enough food or kids missed a meal more than doubled from June 2020 to early 2026.”

With our partner Second Harvest Foodbank of Central Florida, Project Share is working hard to get food into the cupboards of lower income households. Thanks to your donations, we have been able to purchase extra pallets of meat to help provide protein-based meals that matter for families.

But make no mistake, these are tough times for our most vulnerable neighbors. Your support, your willingness to volunteer, and all of our community partners that lend a hand are helping Project Share make a difference for struggling families in our own backyard.
